In this article, you will learn about virtual locations and their security.
We will cover the following:
What are virtual locations?
A virtual server location is a partitioned space inside a physical server that re-creates the functionality of a dedicated server. It allows multiple users to share its processing power, makes it easy to reallocate resources and adapt to dynamic workloads, and lets us maintain high connection speeds.
Why does Surfshark use virtual locations?
The reason Surfshark uses virtual locations is to provide our customers with access to locations where setting up physical servers is typically challenging, often due to the lack of reliable data centers and top-tier internet service providers in particular countries.
From a customer's perspective, virtual locations are functionally identical to physical ones – for example, if you connect to a German virtual location, the physical server can be located in France.
Are virtual locations secure?
All our virtual location servers meet our strict no-logs criteria. Every server gets a fresh Linux installation, our standard configuration, and goes through various tests before launching it to the public.
